Prompt Patterns: Reusable Frames for Better Results
Prompt patterns are reusable structures that help you build clear, effective prompts every time. They provide a reliable framework for generating consistent results while saving you time. But remember: great prompts come from combining structure with creativity.
🎠The Persona Frame
Purpose: Set the voice or expertise level of the AI.
When to use: You want responses from a specific point of view or tone.
Template:
You are a [PERSONA ROLE] with expertise in [DOMAIN]. Please [TASK], using a [TONE] style and explain as if speaking to [AUDIENCE].
Example:
You are a seasoned data scientist. Please analyze this CSV of sales figures and summarize three trends in a conversational tone, as if explaining to a non-technical manager.
🎬 The Roleplay Frame
Purpose: Simulate interactive scenarios or conversations.
When to use: For interviews, simulations, coaching, or dynamic Q&A.
Template:
Let’s roleplay: You are [ROLE A] and I am [ROLE B]. [ROLE A], please start by [SCENARIO OR QUESTION]. Then I will respond as [ROLE B], and you will reply accordingly.
Example:
Let’s roleplay: You are a technical interviewer and I’m a junior developer. Interviewer, please ask me three questions about RESTful APIs. Then I will answer, and you’ll provide feedback on each response.
🔧 The Refine Frame
Purpose: Improve or adjust existing text for tone, clarity, or brevity.
When to use: When you want to polish a rough draft.
Template:
Here is my draft: “[INSERT TEXT]”. Please refine this text to be [GOAL], ensuring it’s [TONE/STYLE] and under [LENGTH CONSTRAINT].
Example:
Here is my draft: “Our Q2 profits rose by 12% due to strong cloud services growth.” Please refine this to be more engaging for a marketing email, under 30 words, while keeping it upbeat.
🧠Pattern vs. Perspective
While patterns give us structure, they can also unintentionally guide our thinking into narrow perspectives. Don’t fall into the trap of always using the same tone or role—be intentional with the persona you choose.
Example:
Prompt A: You are a policy advisor analyzing electric vehicle adoption. Prompt B: You are an oil industry strategist analyzing electric vehicle adoption.
Same format, very different results. Use patterns as a starting point—but don’t be afraid to challenge your defaults.
📝 Try It Yourself
- Persona: You are a travel blogger specializing in off-grid adventures. Write a summary of your latest trip in an inspiring tone for first-time explorers.
- Roleplay: Let’s roleplay: You are a startup investor and I’m pitching my AI health app. Ask me 2 questions and then provide feedback.
- Refine: My draft: “The app helps people sleep better.” Refine it for a press release in a professional tone, under 20 words.
